A little about ourselves
Haugaland videregående skole is the largest Upper secondary school [offering trade subjects] in the district of Haugaland.  The school was established in 1896 and was known then as Haugesund Tekniske Aftenskole (Haugesund technical evening school).

Throughout the past 100 years both the district and the school have grown together in close loyalty.  In the course of these years the school has provided nearly 20 000 haugalendinger a trade education and, through them, influenced the social development of the area around Karmsundet.  The name of the school has changed through time: Haugesund Tekniske Aftenskole, Haugesund Yrkesskoler (Haugesund trade school) and now Haugaland videregående skole (Haugaland upper secondary school).  The path has gone from the forge to the computer.

The school has approximately 160 staff and about 800 students (including trainees).  The trade courses we offer are:

  • Art and design
  • Mechanical
  • Construction
  • Health studies
  • Service studies

Our historie

Haugesund technical evening school used the premises of 'Breidablikk' school in Haugesund's center from 1896 until 1963.

The old buildings of Haugesund trade school.

Haugaland trade school was opened in 1936.  During the period from 1936 up til 1962 the entire student body was between 50-65 pr år.

The first building stage of a new trade school at Spannavegen 38 in Haugesund was started in the autumn of 1962 and was used by Haugesund trade school (a combination of Haugesund apprentice school and Haugesund trade school).

By 1983 a much larger building addition/renovation to Haugaland upper secondary school was completed.

These alterations meant, amonst other things, that the school was now in a position to offer courses in which [mostly] female students would apply for.  Before 1983 the school had had typical handcraft and industrial courses which generally consisted of male students.

Our international projects
One of the school's aims is to encourage cooperation with other schools, both locally and internationaly.  We are currently cooperating with schools in Gothenberg (Sweden), Durham (United Kingdom), Cape Town (South Africa) and George (South Africa).  In addition we send some of our students who are part of the Health studies course to Spain for their practicum.
